Prerequisite: each delegate must already have completed a Super User course (Coaching, Damage Investigations, or both). This one-day refresher brings that knowledge and those skills back up to date. Maximum 6 delegates per trainer.
Refreshes all three Super User courses
One day for anyone who has taken Super User, whichever of the three versions it was. The refresh follows the course you took:
Damage Investigations
For safety professionals and technical leads who need a deep understanding of the kit and the data, and how to conduct a strike investigation to a completed USAG form.
Coaching
For those in a supervisory or support role backing teams on site: coaching, assessing and signing off site operatives.
Coaching & Investigations
For those who need to do both: run the investigation and coach the team off the back of it. The complete Super User.
Course objectives
Refresh your knowledge, bring it up to date, and prove it on the ground.
Over one flexible day of classroom and practical, alternating between inside and outside time to find the right mix, every delegate will be able to:
- ✓Refresh the risks related to utility strikes and HSG47
- ✓Bring your knowledge of industry standards and the locator and CAT data software up to date
- ✓Conduct a utility survey pre-excavation, Genny first
- ✓Be practically competent in the use of location equipment
- ✓Download, export and analyse CAT data
- ✓Complete a permit to dig
- ✓Refresh your Super User role: coaching and assessing others, investigating strikes, or both
- ✓Support teams on site in utility location and avoidance

A focused refresh of the theory, the kit, the data and the standards — starting with what has changed since your course.
What's changed since your course
3 topicsIndustry standards & guidance
A refresh on HSG47 and the standards behind safe digging, and any updates to industry guidance since your last course.

Detection theory refresh
3 topicsElectromagnetic theory & limitations
How the locator works, what it can and cannot find, and the myths to keep busting on site.
Transmitter techniques
Genny first in every mode: dual frequency, capacitance for small or non-earthed cables, earthing and earth positioning, blind induction search and nulling.
Signal interpretation & depth
Reading the signal, distortion and its effect on accuracy, joints and changes of direction, and testing depth readings.
Plans & permits
2 topicsBuried service plans
Reading plans, their inaccuracies and limitations, and planning the right detection technique for the site.
Permit to dig
Completing and signing off a permit to dig within the company's safe system of work.

Usage patterns, and spotting good and bad practice in how the kit is being used on site.
Your Super User role
2 topicsCoaching & assessing others
Coaching tips, and assessment planning and structure, for Super Users who support and sign off site operatives.
Strike investigation & the USAG form
Conducting a utility-strike investigation and completing the USAG strike form, with CAT data as evidence.
On the ground · the practical
Practical refresh
A flexible mix of inside and outside time over the day. Genny first throughout, then the coaching or investigation work of your own Super User role.
Location refresh, all modes
Back on the ground with the kit — a full utility survey led with the Genny, checking every technique is still sharp.
- Use service plans and site information to establish routes, with visual checks before any work begins
- Conduct a utility survey starting with the Genny
- The cable locator and signal transmitter combination, including dual frequency where applicable
- LV service and main tracing, including the location of joints
- Street-light and communication cable location
- Induction — including blind sweeps and nulling out
- Capacitance techniques, and the effect of repositioning the Genny earth
- A practical assessment on each delegate
Your Super User role, refreshed
The coaching, the investigation, or both — matched to the Super User course each delegate holds.
- Coaching and assessing each other, with Sygma supporting individually
- Assessment forms completed and scored
- A worked strike investigation, from the CAT data to a completed USAG form
- Problem scenarios found on site and resolved
On the day
What we need from the host site
Sygma bring the equipment, the trainer and the expertise. To run the one-day Super User Refresher, the site needs:
- ✓Each delegate must already have completed a Super User course (Coaching, Damage Investigations, or both)
- ✓STATS plans (buried service drawings) for the practical site — Sygma can supply for an agreed cost
- ✓Ideally, access to working teams or live sites nearby for the on-site assessment element
- ✓Delegates ideally bring their own kit; Sygma bring enough Genny4 & C.A.T.4+ for a standard course (non-C.A.T.4+ kit: 1 locator per 3 people)
- ✓On-site parking suitable for a transit-sized van
- ✓A room that seats all delegates and the trainer, with welfare facilities and a wall or screen for a projector
- ✓Appropriate PPE per national, company and H&S requirements
- ✓A practical area with numerous buried metallic utilities nearby
- ✓Host risk assessment of the site and training room; brief the trainer on any risks
- ✓Government photographic ID per delegate (driving licence, passport or residence permit)
Assessment
Assessed across the day
Delegates complete several assessments across the day:
- The standard Sygma multiple-choice paper in the classroom
- Each delegate completes their own POW risk assessment before the practical
- The Sygma Standard practical: locating services in their own right
- A coaching assessment, a worked strike investigation, or both, matching the Super User course each delegate holds
- A permit to break ground — customer-specific where possible, otherwise the Sygma permit
