There is a wide range of manufacturers of tools that are essential for the location of underground services. This is because it is a big market, since the vast majority of construction projects involve digging into the ground.

The problem is that, as soon as you start digging, it is very easy to have a cable strike if you have not carried out a site survey before beginning. There are a number of things that you need to do before beginning any sort of excavation work, not the least of which is contacting all the local utilities in the area and obtaining any plans or drawings that they have.

However, the one thing that you should never do is take a look at the plans and then rely on them being accurate. That could be disastrous. OK, we are not saying that plans, or STATS as they are called, are never accurate, but a lot of them contain errors. In some cases, there may not be any STATS available at all.

This is for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that there is no national method for producing them. So, different utilities will use different methods. They are also updated sometimes, and errors can occur. They can have been changed from hand-drawn plans over the years to computerised versions. They may not have even been accurate in the first place! So, you cannot rely on them but only use them as a guide.

A Site Survey Is Imperative

Therefore, it is essential to carry out a thorough survey on site in order to identify and locate any services that are present. The main tools used for this are the CAT And Genny, in addition to GPR equipment.

One well-known manufacturer of CATs and Gennys is C.Scope International Ltd., based in Ashford in Kent, and at Sygma Solutions our training courses include C.Scope training. There is no doubt whatsoever that these tools are sophisticated, as they have been developed over the last 40 or more years. But this means that it is vital to fully understand how they work in all their various modes and the different functions that are available.

After all, if you carry out an on-site survey and get something wrong, resulting in a cable strike, the results could range from having to carry out expensive repairs, to serious injuries, or even fatalities, to workers on the site.

Our C.Scope Training at Sygma Solutions will ensure that operatives can carry out their surveys with confidence and ensure the safety of workers.
