At Sygma Solutions we are sometimes asked why we provide so much training in the area of location and identification of underground services.
The answer is that, while you need a CAT and Genny, you can’t just go to a supplier and buy one of each, take them out of the box, and read the instructions. You have to learn how to use them in all their different modes, and you also have to learn that they have certain limitations. If you don’t understand what those limitations are, and you don’t know what to do in a given set of circumstances, you could land yourself in hot water.
It is much the same as learning to drive a car. Sure, you can go to the local dealer and buy a car, and it will come with a very thick book of instructions. But if you have never driven a car before, you are going to be a menace on the roads. You need to spend time with a driving instructor, and you have to pass a test in order to obtain a licence and be permitted to drive on the roads, and quite right too.
There are tests to pass in the use of the equipment for location of underground services, and if you want to work in certain areas, you have to pass them before you are permitted to. So, if you want to work on Heathrow Airport or HS2, just as a couple of examples, you need to be a Level 5 Utility Surveyor. This will also enable you to PAS128 Quality Level B surveys.
In addition, you need to use the approved tools. You can get thrown off site if you use the wrong ones.
In order to become a Level 5 Utility Surveyor and carry out Level 5 utility mapping, you already have to have obtained the Level 3 Utility Surveyor qualification. In order to obtain the Level 5 qualification, the necessary training can be undertaken at our training centre in Wigan, or it can also be carried out on your site if you prefer. In addition, we run training at The Survey School in Worcester. The training covers everything you need to know about geomatics and site surveying management.
Geomatics is a broad field and includes land surveying, underwater soundings (Bathometric information), LiDAR/photogrammetry from an airplane or UAV, and laser scanning. Land surveying is also a broad term, generally describing any activity involving property lines, property descriptions, property monumentation, or the historic documentation of any of the above. So, as you can see, there is a lot of information to learn and understand.
At Sygma Solutions we have a range of different options for you to obtain this qualification for Level 5 Utility Mapping, and it will depend largely on your experience. We are happy to provide a tailored training and assessment plan for each individual in order to minimise the amount of time off site and be cost effective.
