Before commencing any sort of excavation on a construction site, it is essential to undertake a thorough physical survey of the site using the required tools in order to establish what services and utilities there are underground and where they are. It is estimated that there are as much as 2.5 million kilometres of underground services in the UK, so they can literally be anywhere.

Not only that, but there are estimated to be 4,000,000 projects every year involving excavation at some point. On average this leads to 60,000 cable strikes each year, which is a small percentage, but nonetheless often results in injuries to workers on site and which are in some instances fatal. Even one cable strike is one too many.

Therefore, it is vital that every construction project that involves any sort of excavation – even if it is only a foot deep – is preceded by a detailed survey in order to obtain as much information as possible about what is on the site and where the services run. Once this has been obtained, then it is possible to proceed cautiously with digging. We say cautiously, because there can still be situations where the information may not be 100% accurate.

Signals May Sometimes Be Confusing

At Sygma Solutions we provide utility mapping training courses which will teach underground surveyors how to use the various tools that are involved, and how to interpret their findings. Critically, we also teach how to proceed if there may be some doubt in any given situation. There can be cases where signals given off by a service when using the CAT and Genny may be confusing, or where – despite the sophistication of today’s equipment – it may lead to a conclusion that there is nothing there when in fact there is.

As a very simple example, which we have used before, it may be that a service is buried at a depth below which the tools can read so it shows nothing present. The answer in this sort of case is to begin to dig carefully down to about a foot, and then take another reading, in which case a service may well show up if it is present.

All of these types of situations are dealt with in our utility mapping training courses. Our team has over 100 years of combined experience of locating and identifying underground services and our aim is always to ensure that when operatives have finished the course, they can proceed to carry out their surveys with confidence.
