Nobody knows for sure, but it is estimated that there are some 4 million excavations that take place each year in the UK. These can be anything from a small hole dug to repair a pipe or cable to something such as the foundations for a major building the size of Buckingham Palace. Well, perhaps not quite as big as that, but there are nonetheless some pretty large buildings created each year.
The problem is that there are also (again estimated) some 2.5 kilometres of underground services of one sort or another in the UK, and that is a lot of utilities. We all need water, sewage pipes, electricity, telecoms, in some cases gas, and there are all sorts of things such as fibreoptics, gases such as nitrogen, toxic liquids, and more – all running underground.
They can quite literally be anywhere, even in the most out of the way places where you would not expect to find them. We have made this point before, but it is true, that you might see a field full of sheep and wouldn’t even consider that there could be underground utilities running through it. However, it might just be the shortest route from village A to village B, and so that is where the electricity board ran the cable!
All right, there may not be any utilities on the top of Snowdon, but then you are not going to be doing any construction up there either. However, the general rule is that, unless you know for certain that there is nothing on the site where you need to dig, you must assume that there is something there.
In turn, that means that you need to carry out a survey on site in order to avoid any utilities, and that means that you need the appropriate tools with which to do it. It also means that you need utility avoidance training, because you can’t just take them out of the box and read the instructions. This is akin to learning to drive. You can’t just jump in a car and tootle off down the road. You need training from an experienced instructor.
At Sygma Solutions we provide utility avoidance training of the highest order. Our team has a combined experience of over 100 years in utility avoidance, and not only do we provide training, but we also supply and service the Mala Easy Locator because we are the sole UK distributor for this company. We also have five of these available for hire if you want to undertake a survey on your own.
Our utility surveyor course includes training that also covers the Level 3 Certificate in Utility Mapping and Surveying. This is the qualification that enables you to undertake PAS128 Quality Level C and Quality Level D, which are the site reconnaissance survey and desktop survey. When you have undertaken this utility surveyor course and passed for the qualifications, you are then entitled to a CSCS card which will open up some new opportunities, such as being able to work on HS2 and Heathrow Airport.
