If you wish to work as a site surveyor for the location and identification of underground utilities on an HS2 site, you will need the Proqual QCF Level 2 Utility Avoidance and Location Qualification, as it is an HS2 requirement. The good news is that, at Sygma Solutions, we provide a 2-day training and assessment course that will enable you to obtain the Proqual QCF Level 2 Utility Avoidance and Location Qualificationso that you will be able to work on any HS2 site.
The location and identification of underground services is critical before commencing any sort of excavation work, and in a recent survey of construction workers and industry professionals, 93% of them said that they believed that they always dig safely. However, just under one third of them – 31% – followed up and admitted that they did not always check for underground electricity cables before commencing to dig!
Believe it or not, of that 31%, 24% said that they did not do so because they didn’t think that they would dig deep enough to hit anything, while 15% of them stated that it was not their responsibility to check.
It’s a fact that underground services can be absolutely anywhere – even out in a field full of sheep, which is the last place that you might expect to find them. This is the 21st century, and even in the tiniest hamlet out in the sticks, the residents there still need water, electricity, telecoms, broadband, sewage pipes, and so on. So, in fact, it doesn’t matter where a construction contractor needs to dig: a thorough site survey MUST be carried every single time before putting a spade into the ground.
Striking underground services can cause serious injury and is on occasion fatal. Certainly, carrying out a site survey takes time and costs money, but why would anyone risk life-changing injuries, and even death, and start to dig in total ignorance of whether they might, or might not, hit anything? You could strike an electricity cable even doing something so apparently simple as putting up a new fence in your front garden.
Certainly, if you are a homeowner, and going to put up that fence yourself at the weekend, you won’t have the skills or equipment to locate underground services yourself. But it is still well worthwhile employing the services of a trained operative to survey the ground for you before you start to dig holes for the fence posts.
At Sygma Solutions we have a combined experience of over 100 years in the location and identification of underground services, and we can also provide operatives with training for the Proqual QCF Level 3 Utility Surveyor Qualification. The Proqual QCF Level 3 Utility Surveyor Qualification is the qualification required to undertake a Pas128 Quality Level D (Desktop Survey) & Quality Level C (Site Reconnaissance Survey). In addition, it also enables the holder to obtain a gold CSCS card.
