When it comes to the necessity for construction businesses, utility providers, landscape contractors, and many more, who need to carry out any form of excavation work, it is vital that they carry out a thorough survey of the land on which they are going to dig.
This is because it is estimated that there are no less than 1.5 million kilometres of services that run underground in the UK – electricity, water, gas, telecoms, fibreoptics, sewage pipes, and more – and if you should hit any of them when digging, the consequences can vary from a temporary halt in the supply of those services to instances which can be fatal – and in around a dozen cases each year, unfortunately are.
What this means is that it is critical to ensure that you have done everything possible to locate those underground services and mark them out on the ground surface before commencing any work so that they can be avoided. The two main pieces of equipment for location of underground services are the CAT and Genny (Cable Avoidance Tool and Signal Generator), and there are a number of different manufacturers who produce them.
One such manufacturer is C.Scope International Ltd, based in Ashford, Kent, which has been producing the CAT and Genny for 40 years. As with many pieces of technical equipment (and these are highly technical) you need training in the use of them in order to fully understand how they work and what they can – and cannot – locate. And there can be instances when they produce what seems to be a negative result when in fact there is a utility of one sort or another present. So, it is critical that operatives understand how this can happen and what action to take if it should.
At Sygma Solutions, we have over 100 years of combined experience in the use of the CAT and Genny, and we can provide operatives with C.Scope training for the use of these particular products, among others.
Our C.Scope training is carried out both in the classroom and out in the field on site. Not only can we provide classroom training at our premises in St. Helens, but also at your premises if required. In addition, since the pandemic began, we have also been able to provide online classroom training, where operatives can still ask questions and get answers from the instructor, thus saving on transport and accommodation costs. (Obviously, this is just the classroom training, because it is still essential to undertake practical work on site).
So, whatever your requirements for training in the location of underground services, we have the answer.
