Any contractor who is required to undertake any form of excavation work should understand that before putting a spade in the ground it is vital to carry out a thorough survey of the site in order to establish the location and type of any utilities that are there. There are still far too many cable strikes in the UK every year. Of the 4,000,000 excavations undertaken, some 60,000 such strikes occur.

At the very least, these will delay the project, resulting in workers standing idle until the utility can be repaired – at a cost, of course. They can also cause huge disruption to local businesses resulting in loss of income. In addition, such strikes can result in damage to the reputation of the contractor involved.

While 60,000 is only 1.5% of the 4 million excavations each year, they can also result in serious injury to workers, and in some cases are fatal.

Obtain STATS

The very first thing to do when undertaking a survey is to obtain plans – or STATS – from the utilities in the area. However, and we cannot emphasise this enough, STATS can only ever be taken as a guide. Over the years, cables may be removed or replaced elsewhere, and the new position or depth not recorded. The STATS may have been changed over to a computerised version and errors crept in. In other instances, there may simply be no STATS available at all. Nonetheless, any STATS that are available can be used as a starting point.

Once one has that information, a thorough on-site survey can be undertaken to determine if it is correct or not. In many instances it will not be. It is then essential to carry out the survey using the tools available – the CAT, Genny, and GPR.

Using these tools requires utility detection training by the expert team that we have at Sygma Solutions. This is because, as up to date as the tools are, they have certain limitations. You cannot just take them out of the box and read the instructions! Well, you could, but it would not be a good idea.

Our utility detection training courses cover absolutely everything that an operative needs to understand in order carry out a survey correctly and produce a result that can be relied upon.

Even then, there can be situations where a result can be misinterpreted, since the equipment does have these limitations. We also cover these in our courses and teach what to do in such cases.
