If you work in the construction industry and your job includes locating and identifying underground services on a site where excavation is due to take place, it is vital to undertake a CAT and Genny course such as those that we provide at Sygma Solutions.
You cannot just take the CAT and Genny out of the box and read the instructions because there is far more to it than that. It would be just too easy to make mistakes without the proper training. For example, and we have said this before, but it is worth repeating, you might use the CAT and Genny and decide that there is nothing in the site where you are going to dig. So, you start digging away and suddenly hit a cable or gas pipe for instance.
Why?
Because the utility was at a depth below which the equipment could read. So, you had the impression there was nothing there when in fact, there was.
The answer in that sort of situation is to commence digging very carefully, but only down about a foot or so. You then take another reading with the CAT and Genny and this time it finds the hidden service. This is the sort of thing that we teach on our CAT and Genny course, because there is a lot to learn before you can carry out a site survey in complete confidence. We have a renowned track record with contractors and utility companies for reducing utility strikes.
Believe it or not, a survey of contractors and industry professionals found that 93% of them considered that they always dig safely, yet 31% of them – nearly one third – admitted that they did not always check a site for underground utilities before commencing work. Reasons given were that 15% believed that it was not their responsibility, while 24% didn’t think that they would dig deep enough to hit anything! Can you believe that?
It is absolutely critical to do everything in your power to check for underground services in any area where you may be required to dig. That begins with obtaining STATS from the utility companies in the area, but these cannot be relied upon, for a number of reasons. Not the least of them is that there is no unified system of recording, so different utilities will use different methods. Records may also be well out of date because subsequent alterations have not been recorded.
In addition, over the years the methods of record keeping have morphed from hand drawings through microfiches to computer records and it is very possible that errors have crept in along the way. However, STATS are a useful starting point.
The only way to ensure that you have as accurate details as possible is to undertake an on-site survey using the latest tools in order to locate and identify underground services, and that is what we teach at Sygma Solutions. Our courses are recognised by The Survey Association and the CITB.
