CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) are two tools that work jointly in locating underground utility services. The CAT is a handset that can identify the invisible electromagnetic signals given off by buried cables, while the Genny boosts this detection in return by sending a specific signal along that utility. Together, they give a more accurate location of buried services.
Plan your survey using CAT & Genny. Identify the area where you expect to find underground utilities and check existing plans for utility routes. Apply a signal to the service you wish to locate using the Genny and use the CAT to detect this signal. This equipment needs to be used in a number of different modes, including power, radio, and Genny modes, as not all signals can be picked up in one mode. The most common mistake is relying solely on passive detection, which uses the CAT in the power and radio modes. It can miss lots of services, particularly if they are not radiating a signal.
