This training is designed to teach individuals who operate near excavations how to securely identify utility services using known and authorised detection techniques. Participants will receive hands-on training and learn safe excavation methods to prevent service strikes and ensure safety in the workplace.

Goals

Delegates will not only be trained in safe excavation methods but will also learn how to effectively utilise a CAT and Genny to locate buried services. This training is essential for those involved in excavation work.

Content of EUSR Courses

The EUSR CAT and Genny course covers several key areas, including:

  • Relevant laws and how they apply to the use of tools like Genny and CAT.
  • The objectives of CAT and Genny about construction projects.
  • The importance of conducting an on-site assessment of current services and understanding the types of surveys available.
  • The appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that workers must wear.
  • How to recognise various utilities from site plans and identify underground services in situ.
  • The risks and dangers of operating in and around existing subterranean services.
  • Understanding the many CAT functions and their meanings.
  • The purposes of the Genny and their significance.
  • Safe excavation techniques near subterranean utilities, such as trial hole excavation and proper excavation support.
  • The consequences of service strikes and how to handle impaired services.
  • Recognising the various types of soil when digging and the risks associated with collapse.
  • How water infiltration and vibration can impact an excavation’s stability.
  • The importance of appropriate segregation when operating near excavations.
  • How to store dug dirt in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • The many types of instruments are available for use in excavation.

Is It Necessary to Complete Categories 1 and 2 Concurrently?

It is advised that delegates intending to perform any excavation work complete both categories at the same time. This ensures that they won’t have to rely solely on the accuracy of any location or marking work performed by others, providing greater confidence in the excavation process.

Who Should Take the Excavation Safety Courses?

Categories 1 and 2 are intended for all workers, managers, and supervisors who are starting excavation work. These EUSR CAT and Genny courses help them adhere to HSE guidelines 150, HSG47 (safe excavation), and GS6 (Avoid contact with Overhead Power Lines) and their recommendations.

Categories 3, 4, and 5 are aimed at all managers, supervisors, and workers involved in excavation work. These courses ensure compliance with the relevant sections of HSE guidelines HSG47 and HSG150, CIRIA Trenching Practice, and other pertinent requirements.
