The construction industry is one of the most dangerous for workers that there is. Accidents can happen for many different reasons, and they can literally happen from the ground up. A lot of heavy equipment is used. Scaffolding can cause issues with people falling from height. There can be problems installing electricity, gas, water, and so on.
But if you are constructing a building, you can have problems from the very first day because the first job is to build the foundations, and that means digging.
Now, your average gardener would not consider digging to plant a few potatoes as a dangerous job – although it could be. But when you are digging on a construction site, you need to be aware that virtually all of our utilities run underground. And not all that far underground either. Certainly, there are some telegraph poles in existence that connect buildings to the telephone system with cables, but the vast majority of those are under the ground. So is just about everything else: water, electricity, sewage pipes, gas, telecoms, fibreoptics – you name it, it’s all underground.
Whether you are beginning the construction of a new building or simply digging down to repair a water pipe that is leaking, you have to be very aware that there are other services which may be in virtually the same place. If you strike some of those services, such as telecoms, you are not all that likely to get injured. If you strike an electricity cable you can get killed. This is why it is essential to undertake a survey to locate and identify any and all services that run where you need to dig, before you ever lift a spade.
Certainly, you can, and should, obtain any available plans from the local utility providers in the area, but while they may be accurate, they can often be wildly inaccurate, for reasons that we won’t delve into here. The point is that you absolutely cannot rely on them. They can only act as a guide.
So you need to use the very latest equipment such as the Radiodetection 8100 in order to locate services before you start work. For this you will need Radiodetection training such as that which we provide at Sygma Solutions. Our Radiodetection training courses will teach participants how to use these tools and, most importantly, what the limitations are. And they do have certain limitations.
While our Radiodetection courses teach how to use the equipment, you also need a basic knowledge of how and why and where underground services may run. This is why we also provide an HSG47 course which covers the information and guidance provided by the Health & Safety Executive.
Our HSG47 course will teach operatives electromagnetic theory, and how a pipe and cable locator works. It also explains the limitations of the equipment, because it is important to understand them. It teaches how to understand and read STATS – buried service plans – and how to interpret the different types, and a whole lot more. In order to determine when we have course availability, call us on 0844 241 2597 or email enquiries@sygma-solutions.com.
