Many gardeners don’t think twice about digging their veg plot and sowing a couple of rows of peas or beans. They probably don’t think about planting a shrub or a small tree either. Just dig the hole, put some compost in it, plant the shrub, backfill the hole, and let Mother Nature carry on from there.

The fact is that if you are only digging down a few inches, or even a couple of feet in your back garden, you are not very likely to strike a gas pipe or electricity cable, because they are probably located deeper down. However, that is something that gardeners should take into account if digging a hole to plant new fence posts for example. After all, you need your electricity supply, your mains water, your sewage pipes, and so on, and they are all connected to lines running down the road or under the pavement. But they all have to come into your property somewhere! So, you need to dig very carefully.

It Is Essential To Avoid A Cable Strike

Of course, if you are working for a utility company and digging holes in the road in order to carry out repairs, then there are very good chances of other utilities running alongside or above or underneath the one that you are going to repair or replace. Therefore, it is vital to know what other utilities may be there, in order to avoid a cable strike. (A cable strike is a term that is used generally, and can mean striking any type of utility, not just electric or telecoms).

This means that it is essential to carry out a survey of the area and to locate and identify all existing utilities, chiefly by using the CAT and Genny. The CAT used alone is only able to locate electromagnetic signals emitted by metallic services, so it is essential to use the Genny to produce a signal that travels along others in order for the CAT to locate them.

These tools are sophisticated and, used correctly, can locate most services. However, it is essential to understand how to use them in all their modes, and this is what we teach at Sygma Solutions in our CAT course.

This is, in one sense, similar to using a car if you have not driven before. You don’t buy a car, read the handbook, and then jump in and drive off. You need to learn how to use the car in all the different possible circumstances. You need training.

The same thing applies to the location of underground services, so our CAT course teaches operatives everything that they need to know.
