At Sygma Solutions we are regarded as the foremost provider of training in the UK in the location of underground services. Our team has over 100 years of combined experience in the use of the various tools that are required to carry out such work, and this includes manufacturing and servicing, and calibration when required. Of course, we keep up to date on all of the latest products as well, because manufacturers don’t stand still.
There are several manufacturers of Cable Avoidance Tools and Signal Generators, known as the CAT and Genny, which are the main tools required, along with others such as sondes, for example. A sonde can be used to detect buried plastic water pipes or gas pipes, and any other utility which is not magnetic. It is a self-contained transmitter that can be attached to a flexi-rod and pushed along a pipe and can then be detected from the surface. So, for example, if there is a blockage in a pipe the sonde can be pushed through it until it stops and then the position detected.
Cable Avoidance Tool manufacturers include C.Scope International which is based in Ashford, Kent, and produces a range of sondes, flexible tracers, signal clamps, and so on, and CATs and Gennys, such as the MXL4 Precision locator. We provide C.Scope training in all of the equipment that the company produces.
The MXL4 Precision locator is available in two version, the MXL4-D and the MXL4-DBG. The MXL4-D has full data logging ability, while the MXL4-DBG includes Bluetooth connectivity and GPS. These pieces of equipment use noise rejection which means that they can handle high levels of background interference, which in turn means that they can detect very weak signals.
The MXL4 series can also detect small diameter or badly earthed cables because it has a greater range of frequencies which permit better long-distance tracing and identification of utilities. Other features include the Dynamic Swing Sensor which will produce a warning to the operative if the locator is being swung excessively, which could potentially lead to a false reading.
We cover all of the capabilities of the MXL4 series in our C.Scope training. Another big advantage of the MXL4 locators is that, unlike, many Cable Avoidance Tools, they do not require calibration. This is because they provide an ADST – Automatic Daily Self-Test – which checks how well they are functioning, including the receiving aerials, when the locator is switched on each day. This gives operatives confidence that the unit is performing at peak level.
