Industry insiders understand that it is critical to avoid striking any underground services when commencing any sort of work that involves digging into the soil, whether that is using a digger such as a JCB or just a fork and shovel. We know that there are at least 1.5 million km of services that run underground in the UK, and the unfortunate fact is that we also know that there are some 60,000 cable strikes a year. A “cable strike” is an overall term which covers any sort of utility, which may be cables, pipes, and so on. Indeed, there are some 60,000 cable strikes a year. Looked at another way, that is 165 every single day!

Cable avoidance is critical, because striking an underground service can have a number of results. Apart from the obvious fact that there is damage to the service which in many cases will put it out of action, there can be serious and life-changing injuries to workers, and there are even around a dozen fatalities every year.

Obviously, it is essential to undertake a thorough survey of any piece of ground that needs to be excavated in order to understand what, if anything, is there, and secondly, what type of services are present, and ideally how deep down they are. For instance, if you only need to dig down a couple of feet and you can ascertain that while there are services there, they are four feet or more under the surface, you can proceed with a certain amount of confidence, albeit carefully.

Training In The Use Of The Specialist Tools For Location Of Services

At Sygma Solutions we provide cable avoidance training in the use of the various tools that are required to locate and identify underground services. One such tool is the Mala Radiodetection RD8100, which is the latest in a range that Mala has been producing for over 40 years. Not only do we provide Radiodetection training in the use of the RD8100, but we are also the sole UK agents for Mala, and we can provide calibration services as well.

Our Radiodetection training covers such things as how to trace twisted pair telecoms or street lighting over long distances, and how to pinpoint and discriminate between power cables. When you have dense areas of cables, the signals given off can be confusing, but using the RD8100 you can work out whether the signal comes from one source or several, in which case you can trace and mark them.

The RD8100 is a splendid piece of equipment, but you do need instruction and practice in order to fully understand all its’ aspects.
