When you are engaged in any form of construction project, it all starts at ground level – literally. Or you could say, even below ground level, because every building of any description, unless it’s a garden shed, needs solid foundations. And that means digging.

When you dig into the ground, whether by hand using a spade or shovel, or using something such as a JCB, there is always the possibility that there are underground services running there. This can be as true of places where it would never occur to you that utilities might run, as it is in your local high street, an industrial estate, or a residential area where you know full well that they will be.

This is why it is necessary to use the appropriate tools, such as the CAT and Genny, along with Ground Penetrating Radar, in order to carry out a thorough survey of the site where you are going to dig – whether that is in the high street or out in the wilds.

You Need Proper Training

As with many things that are technical, you need proper training in cable avoidance. As an example, you know how to use your phone and your laptop. But you didn’t just take them out of the box the first time you used them and – hey, off you go! There was a steep learning curve. Sure, you now know how to use a laptop so if you buy a new one you are pretty familiar with the way it is going to work – but not the first time around. The same thing applied when you learned to drive, even though you may have been in your dad’s car since you were a baby.

This is why the cable avoidance courses that we run at Sygma Solutions are vital in order to fully understand all the ins and outs of the tools. Our courses follow HSG47 training, the guidebook issued by the Health & Safety Executive that sets out everything that you need to know about avoiding underground services when digging. HSG47 is aimed at all those involved in commissioning, planning, managing, and carrying out work on or near underground services.

Our HSG47 training applies to all and every situation where underground services may be found and disturbed when working, which is pretty much anywhere. When you have finished our course, you will have the know-how and the confidence to carry out a full survey under any circumstances in order to avoid the dangers of striking utilities and the resultant possible danger to life and limb.
