Every operative who is required to undertake site surveying for the purpose of locating and identifying underground services needs thorough training in the use of the CAT and Genny. These are clever tools, especially when used in combination, but you need to know and understand how to use them in their various modes, and most importantly, understand that they do have certain limitations, and what those limitations are.
If you fail to understand that there could be a false reading under certain conditions, then you may proceed to dig and then strike an underground cable or other utility because the CAT and Genny told you there was nothing present. This is why the CAT and Genny training that we provide at Sygma Solutions is vital. Our courses are recognised by the CITB, CSCS, and The Survey Association.
When the pandemic hit, it meant that for some time we were unable to provide classroom training, and so we then developed online CAT and Genny training which proved very popular. So popular, in fact, that we still offer online CAT and Genny training today.
While it is still essential to meet up on a site for the practical aspects of our CAT and Genny training, the online course has definite benefits for those who need to learn. In practice, it is very much like being in the classroom except that you are not physically present. The courses are conducted by one of our instructors online and use live and interactive software that enable attendees to ask questions and the instructor to provide answers in just the same way as they would if present in person.
So, you get exactly the same instruction, but there is no need to travel to our premises in Wigan. It saves you time off site and the cost of staying overnight. The classes can be held in smaller numbers, and it can also be delivered on a live project if required, which is a big benefit.
Of course, when using equipment such as the CAT and Genny, it is essential to have a practical element so that operatives can put into practice what they have learned in the classroom. In that sense, it is similar to learning to drive a car. You can learn all the basics, but then you have to show that you can do it practically.
We also provide a QCF Level 5 utility mapping course. This is a requirement in order to carry out surveying and excavation works on HS2 and Heathrow Airport, as well as some other sites in the UK. In order to take part in the Level 5 Utility mapping course you need to have completed the Level 3 Utility Surveyor qualification.
The Level 5 Utility Mapping course can be carried out at our premises in Wigan or on your own site if you prefer. It also has the benefit that the training and assessment can be tailored to the needs of specific individuals, dependent upon their experience.
