If you are in the market for a Cable Avoidance Tool, you need to be aware of certain differences in the various models – and there are quite a lot of them. The CAT should always be used in conjunction with a Genny – signal generator – and not in isolation.
Why? Because a CAT on its’ own in power mode can only detect live electricity cables – i.e. with power flowing through them. So, if you are working in the high street in the dark when the streetlights are on you shouldn’t have too much trouble locating the cables that are feeding them. If you are working in the same street in daylight, when the lights are off, you probably won’t find them at all.

Yes. Right!
Not likely. Yet this is exactly what it is like if a construction company begins to start digging and carrying out an excavation without first locating, identifying, and marking any underground utilities that are in the area. The scary thing is that this is exactly what happens in a number of cases.
Read moreNobody knows for sure, but it is estimated that there are some 4 million excavations that take place each year in the UK. These can be anything from a small hole dug to repair a pipe or cable to something such as the foundations for a major building the size of Buckingham Palace. Well, perhaps not quite as big as that, but there are nonetheless some pretty large buildings created each year.
Read moreHSG47 is a document provided by the Health & Safety Executive with regard to the potential dangers of working near underground services, and provides advice on how to reduce the risks. It is aimed primarily at reducing risks to health and safety as opposed to the risk of damaging services, although by reducing the risk to health and safety one is automatically helping to reduce the risk of damage to services.
