At Sygma Solutions we have a combined experience of over 100 years in the use of cable locators and utility detection techniques, and we are delighted to pass on our acquired knowledge to operatives who need to carry out surveys in order to locate and identify underground services before any excavation work is carried out.
Our CAT training courses are hands-on and will teach operatives in the classroom everything that they need to know in order to operate the CAT and Genny in combination and locate any type of underground service so that excavation can be carried out in a safe and controlled manner.
We also offer our CAT training classes online for those who find coming to a physical classroom difficult. These classes are fully interactional, and attendees can ask questions and get answers from our expert instructors.
We then go out on to site and provide attendees with the experience that they require in order to put the skills that they have learned to good use. Our training includes everything that it is necessary to know, including understanding that the CAT and Genny do have certain limitations. It is essential to understand what those limitations are and to be able to avoid errors when out on site.
There are lots of things to understand such as the fact that some ductile iron pipes may be difficult to locate because they can have a rubber seal at the end of each section of the pipe and this breaks the conductivity of the trace signal. That means that it may only be possible to trace small sections of the pipe using a passive frequency.
There are also HV cables which do not emit a passive signal at all, even though they are live, because they have been designed that way. In addition, if you are using something such as the RD8100, an electric or telecoms cable will give off a power or radio signal which can be detected. However, if the utility is dead or cut off then it will not emit any passive signal either.
The signal generator can then be placed on the ground and a signal is emitted into the ground which will “attach” itself to an underground service and then travel along its’ length so that it can be traced on the surface with the receiver in induction mode. If this fails to work, it is then necessary to connect the Genny to the utility with a clip or clamp leads. However, this does require direct access to the utility which for one reason or another may not be possible.
One can then use GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar – to check over the site. This does not look for services directly but looks for variations in ground density which may indicate the presence of services. This can also have issues if the ground is uneven because the unit needs to be close to the ground.
All of these things, and more, are covered in the training courses we provide at Sygma Solutions.
